the project
At Eagle Slope Community Garden, our goal is to create an urban oasis where community residents can learn to garden and work together for the betterment of the community as a whole. We believe that it is vital to involve our youth in gardening as well as introducing them to healthy and fresh food alternatives. Our lives are often hectic and chaotic. Our hope is that every visitor to the Garden feels welcome and feels refreshed and revitalized when they leave, creating a positive experience for gardeners and visitors alike.
the steps
All donations will be used for the purchase of the materials. All labor will be provided by our garden members and volunteers from the community. After the funds become available, material will be purchased. Volunteers will be organized and together with our members they will remove the old and assemble the new raised beds, build a new permanent fish pond and dismantle the old temporary pond structure. Water is life for all the birds, butterflies, and animals in the area
why we're doing it
Our group has worked very hard for years to build a community garden out of the vacant lot it once was, in order to create a more beautiful and healthy South Bronx. Realizing our goals will allow Eagle Slope to continue to provide access too fresh, nutritious foods for a community of people who live in a county with some of the worst health issues due to poor nutritional choices. Additionally, by promoting healthy food, Eagle Slope Community Garden provides the opportunity for neighborhood residents to reconnect with the environment. The beds will contribute to a sustainable food system by allowing participants to grow and eat food from the environment in which they live. Learning how food is grown and where it comes from will create an understanding of the food system. It will also increase awareness about the connections between diet, health and the environment.
