the project
In the 1920's Canal Park disappeared for the next 75 years, becoming a parking lot for garbage trucks, with an imminent plan for its use as additional traffic lanes to the Holland Tunnel. Our community worked tirelessly, (including with legal action), beginning in the late 1990's to reclaim Canal Park.
In 2005 we accomplished the full and historic restoration of this gem of a small park at the western tip of Canal St. After our successful park restoration, we formed Canal Park Conservancy, a 501(c)3, and we have cared for and maintained the natural beauty of Canal Park ever since.
We now need everyone's help to raise significant funds to keep Canal Park flourishing.
Please help us maintain this beautiful urban nature reserve that benefits all who live nearby, and all who visit or pass this way. Help us nurture the abundance nature offers us all.
the steps
Hire our irrigation company for spring start up and repairs.
Hire gardeners to work regularly throughout the spring, summer & fall seasons.
Hire arborist to assess existing trees and help organize new tree purchases and planting.
Purchase trees, plants & related materials and maintain new & existing plantings.
why we're doing it
We all need the healthy haven of green space in this bustling city, and particularly along this Canal St. corridor running from Rt. 9A/West St. to the Holland Tunnel and points east.
Canal Park offers a most welcoming, calming and encouraging natural refuge, a visual reminder and experience of the beauty, vitality and promise of nature, which enhances all our lives.
With love and appreciation for Canal Park, we continue to serve as its custodians.
Please everyone pitch in generously to support Canal Park's ongoing maintenance.
Nature gives us so very much. Please give back what you can.
