the project
I have been in my neighborhood for over 10 years. In 2018, I bought an empty lot in South Memphis. I became associated with Memphis Tilth which taught me how to make a community garden. After seeing the community gardens that were springing up around town, I saw a need and an opportunity to establish a garden and improve my community.
the steps
- Even out the land.
- Purchase a container for storage.
- Get soil, compost, plants, and seeds,
- Buy 5 raised beds.
- Conduct training and get participation from the whole community.
- Plant for our first season of crops.
- Give the harvest to the neighbors for free.
why we're doing it
Our neighborhood is a food desert. The nearest grocery store is 2 miles away. But there are over 11 corner stores and 20 gas stations which serve unhealthy foods. This causes obesity, malnutrition, and life-long health issues. The community does not have access to fruits, vegetables or fresh flowers. Additionally, the neighborhood suffers from blight and needs to be beautified.
